The link in my post is still the best source of recommendations based on price. As a photographer you know perfect color is essential. When I worked in the print industry the pre press department used X-Rite products so I'm kinda biased towards it. Later I got an X-rite display pro for my iMac. I got Spectra Vision which was made by X-rite for NEC. I had a Spyder and could never get it to work right on my NEC which was my own fault. do they calibration tools work on TVs as well? Currently I'm using the 30" 1080p TV with my PC and it is giving me very weird colors and that's why I want something to calibrate it with. The author divides his recommendations up by budget size. Here's a recent and very thorough review/list of monitors for photo editing. Calibration doesn't last forever, but they're clearly targetting people who worry about colour but don't necessarily want to go all the way and calibrate. I'm shopping for a new monitor right now and I've noticed that quite a few are coming calibrated from the factory. The $64,000 question is whether or not you actually need a color managed workflow. They only work with the X-Rite i One Pro and Dell's customization of the X-Rite software. Case in point is the pair of Dell U2413s on my desk. * Some monitors that have hardware LUTs may only work with a specific tool and software package. You can definitely calibrate a monitor without one, but you have a bit more work to do, and it's a software-based solution. * A hardware LUT (lookup table) is really nice. If you donate to Displa圜al, they share the donation.Ĭouple things to watch out for if you are purchasing a monitor and a calibration tool: Displa圜al and Argyll are free but they do ask for a donation. I don't care that much about speed so I prefer the slower more accurate system. Displa圜al and Argyll have better color calibration but use a large number of color patches and it takes longer to run (10-15 minutes). The software XRite delivers in the two packages are very different and the Pro version is more complete and runs faster. The color calibration data is the same and is very accurate. It is the same sensor as the XRite Pro, just slower. I have used both but I now use the ColorMunki. You can check their compatibility list to see if your particular sensor will work. They are open source and use either the ColorMunki or Spyder sensors. I suggest using Displaycal with the ArgyllCMS (see and ). If you can't afford xRite's 'pro' package, then I'd suggest going with a Spyder. I'm pretty sure that the ColorMunki uses the same spectrophotometer (sensor) as xRite's higher-end package, but the ColorMunki software isn't as good. They Spyder gave me more accurate results. $80 including PayPal and shipping ($119 new at Amazon).Īgain, I have never used either device you are asking about.but if you decide to go the Spyder Express route - consider this option.Īt one time I had both a Spyder4 (Elite because I've got dual monitors) and ColorMunki Photo. Check the buy/sell site for Tech Tools here at FM. I don't need it because I use a an NEC specific device from a previous NEC monitor purchase. If you decide upon the Spyder Express, I have a brand new one (never used) in the original box that I received as part of an NEC monitor purchase. I would like to know which one would be better I am looking for something that's not expensive and came across X-Rite ColorMunki Smile and X-Rite ColorMunki Smile that are within my budget. I would also like to use the same tool to calibrate my (future) laptop/tablet. I have calibrated as much as I can using the built-in Windows 10 options but some of the colors still don't look right. Looking to buy my first monitor/tv calibration tool as the TV that I'm currently using as a monitor shows weird colors. Datacolor Spyder5EXPRESS vs X-Rite ColorMunki Smile?.
